Mary Martha Sherwood (1775-1851) was an English author and philanthropist. She wrote over 200 books and pamphlets, mostly for children, and was a major influence in the development of children's literature. Her works were widely read and translated into many languages. Sherwood was born in Islington, London, and was educated at home by her father, a clergyman. She began writing at an early age, and her first book, The History of the Fairchild Family, was published in 1818. She wrote many books for children, including The History of Little Henry and His Bearer (1820), The History of the Robins (1822), and The History of the Children of the Forest (1826). Sherwood was also a philanthropist, and she founded a school for poor children in Islington. She was a strong advocate for the education of women, and she wrote several books on the subject. She was also a supporter of the abolition of slavery. Sherwood died in 1851, and her works remain popular to this day.
