Nathanael West (born Nathan Weinstein; October 17, 1903 – December 22, 1940) was an American author and screenwriter. He is best known for his two novels, The Day of the Locust (1939) and Miss Lonelyhearts (1933). West was born in New York City to a Jewish family. He attended Tufts University and Brown University, but did not graduate from either. He worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood, writing for films such as The Goldwyn Follies (1938) and The Little Foxes (1941). West's writing style was characterized by dark humor and satire. His works often explored themes of alienation, despair, and the dark side of human nature. He died in a car accident in 1940 at the age of 37.
