Philip Francis Nowlan (1888-1940) was an American science fiction writer and journalist. He is best known for creating the character Buck Rogers, which he wrote about in the 1928 novella Armageddon 2419 A.D. Nowlan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career as a journalist, writing for the Philadelphia Public Ledger and other newspapers. In 1928, he wrote Armageddon 2419 A.D., which was published in the magazine Amazing Stories. The story was a huge success and spawned a series of novels, comic strips, radio shows, and movies. Nowlan wrote several other science fiction stories, including The Airlords of Han (1929) and The Girl in the Golden Atom (1922). He also wrote several non-fiction books, including The Story of Electricity (1930). Nowlan died in 1940 at the age of 52.
