R.D. Blackmore

Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825–1900) was an English novelist and poet. He is best known for his novel Lorna Doone, a romance set in Exmoor in the late 17th century. He was born in Longworth, Berkshire, and educated at Blundell's School in Tiverton, Devon. He studied law at Exeter College, Oxford, but never practised. He was a prolific writer, producing over 40 novels, as well as poetry, plays, and non-fiction works. He was a strong advocate of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and his works often featured strong female characters. He died in 1900 in Teddington, Middlesex.
