Ralph Connor (1860-1937) was the pen name of Canadian novelist and Presbyterian minister Charles William Gordon. Born in Glengarry County, Ontario, he was educated at Queen's University and Knox College, Toronto. He was ordained in 1887 and served as a minister in Manitoba and Ontario. In 1898, he published his first novel, The Man from Glengarry, which was an immediate success. He went on to write more than twenty novels, many of which were set in the Canadian West and featured strong moral themes. His works were widely read in Canada and the United States, and he was one of the most popular authors of his time. In addition to his writing, Gordon was active in the Presbyterian Church and in social reform. He was a strong advocate for temperance and was involved in the formation of the United Church of Canada. He also served as a chaplain in World War I. Ralph Connor died in 1937 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
