Robert Ernest Gilbert (1917-2006) was an American author and professor of English literature. He was born in New York City and attended Columbia University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1938. He went on to earn his master's degree from Harvard University in 1940. Gilbert was a professor of English literature at the University of California, Berkeley from 1947 to 1983. He wrote several books, including The Poetry of John Donne (1951), The Poetry of William Wordsworth (1955), and The Poetry of Robert Frost (1962). He also wrote several articles and essays on literature, including "The Poetry of T.S. Eliot" (1956) and "The Poetry of W.B. Yeats" (1958). Gilbert was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Modern Language Association. He was also a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1956. He died in 2006 at the age of 89.
