Russell Thorndike (1885–1972) was an English actor and novelist, best known for his "Doctor Syn" series. Born in Rochester, Kent, he was the brother of actress Dame Sybil Thorndike. He studied at St George's School, Windsor, and later at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His "Doctor Syn" series, starting with "Doctor Syn: A Tale of the Romney Marsh" (1915), follows the adventures of a vicar-turned-smuggler. Thorndike also wrote plays and other novels, but the "Doctor Syn" series remains his most notable work.
