Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was an English writer, poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer. He is best known for "A Dictionary of the English Language" (1755), which significantly influenced Modern English. Johnson also wrote essays, notably for "The Rambler" and "The Idler," and the critical work "Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets." His biography, "The Life of Samuel Johnson" by James Boswell, is considered one of the greatest biographies in English literature. Johnson was a prominent figure in 18th-century London literary society.
