Sara Teasdale (August 8, 1884 – January 29, 1933) was an American lyrical poet. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and educated privately. Teasdale's first published poem appeared in Reedy's Mirror, a local newspaper, when she was only 17. She went on to publish several volumes of poetry, including Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems (1907), Rivers to the Sea (1915), Love Songs (1917), and Flame and Shadow (1920). Teasdale's work was often praised for its musicality and simplicity. She was awarded the first Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1918 for her collection Love Songs. Teasdale was also a member of the Poetry Society of America and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Teasdale suffered from depression and committed suicide in 1933. Her work has been widely anthologized and continues to be studied and appreciated by readers and scholars alike.
