Sterling E. Lanier (1925-1995) was an American author, editor, and businessman. He was best known for his science fiction and fantasy novels, including Hiero's Journey (1973) and The Unforsaken Hiero (1984). He was also the editor of the magazine Venture Science Fiction from 1972 to 1975. Lanier was born in New York City and attended Harvard University, where he earned a degree in English literature. After college, he worked in the advertising industry before joining the publishing house Chilton Books in 1965. He was the editor of Chilton's science fiction and fantasy imprint, and he edited several anthologies of science fiction stories. In addition to his writing and editing work, Lanier was also a successful businessman. He founded the software company Lanier Business Products in the 1970s, and he served as its president until his death in 1995. He was also a member of the board of directors of the National Space Society. Lanier was a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and he was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1996.
