The White Cat by W. W. Jacobs (1943)

The story follows a sailor, Bill, who is returning home from a long voyage. He stops at a pub for a drink and meets a strange old man who tells him the story of a white cat. The old man tells Bill that the cat is cursed and that anyone who owns it will suffer a terrible fate. Bill is skeptical, but the old man insists that the curse is real and that he has seen it happen. Bill decides to take the cat home with him, despite the warnings. Once home, Bill discovers that the cat is actually a white rabbit. He quickly realizes that the old man was right and that the curse is real. Bill and his family are soon plagued by a series of misfortunes, including a fire, a flood, and a burglary. In the end, Bill is able to break the curse by giving the white rabbit away to a kind family. The story ends with Bill and his family living happily ever after.
