The Wachowski Brothers, also known as the Wachowski Siblings, are American film directors, writers, and producers. The siblings are best known for creating the Matrix film series, as well as the Netflix series Sense8. The Wachowski Brothers are Larry and Andy Wachowski, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1965 and 1967, respectively. They grew up in a working-class family and were raised Catholic. They both attended Whitney Young High School, where they developed an interest in comic books and filmmaking. After high school, the brothers attended Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. They dropped out after one semester and moved back to Chicago, where they began working on low-budget films. In 1996, they wrote and directed their first feature film, Bound. The film was a critical success and earned them a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. In 1999, the Wachowski Brothers released The Matrix, which became a worldwide phenomenon and spawned two sequels. The Matrix trilogy earned the brothers numerous awards, including four Academy Award nominations. The Wachowski Brothers have since gone on to direct and produce a number of other films, including V for Vendetta, Speed Racer, and Cloud Atlas. They also created the Netflix series Sense8, which ran for two seasons. The Wachowski Brothers are currently working on a new film, titled The Matrix 4, which is set to be released in 2021.
