William Allingham (1824-1889) was an Irish poet, diarist, and editor. He was born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He worked as a customs official in Ireland and England, and was a friend of many of the leading literary figures of his day, including Alfred Tennyson, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Christina Rossetti. Allingham's poetry was influenced by the Romantic poets, and he wrote on a variety of topics, including nature, love, and death. His best-known works include the poem "The Fairies" and the collection of poems Let Me Sing of What I Know (1905). He also wrote several diaries, which were published posthumously.
