William J. Smyth is a professor of history at the University of Toronto. He is the author of several books on Canadian history, including The People's Railway: A History of Canadian National (1992), The People's Navy: The History of the Royal Canadian Navy (1996), and The People's Army: The Canadian Militia, 1855-1914 (2001). He has also written extensively on the history of the Canadian military, including The Canadian Militia, 1855-1914 (2005) and The Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919 (2008). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a recipient of the Governor General's History Award for Popular Media.
