The next day was Sunday and she went to church alone. Her brother's cold was no better, so Azure reported, and he did not leave his room. When Mary returned home she went out into the kitchen to speak with Mrs. Crisp, but the latter was not there. Mary came back to the front hall and, as she did so, Azure descended the stairs.
