Mary, in her own room on the second floor of the old Brewster house was seated in a rocking chair, her aching head pillowed upon the cushion at its back, and her eyes closed. Hours of thinking and fruitless striving to plan for the future had brought only the headache and utter exhaustion. Suddenly she started and sat up. It seemed to her that she had heard an unusual sound, a stifled scream, from somewhere in the house. She listened intently. The sound was not repeated and she was beginning to think she had imagined it, when footsteps approached her door.
"Mary, Mary, are you in there?"
