Emily Hanna grew up on a cattle ranch about twenty miles south of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her father, Kirk Hanna, was handsome enough to be a cowboy in a Hollywood movie. He liked to take Emily along as he did chores on the ranch-even when she was a little baby. He'd carry her in a little sheepskin pouch and tie the pouch to a nearby fence post, then get to work. Emily and her sister, Maggie, who's two years older, were taught from an early age to work hard, to be fearless and independent. Sometimes Kirk would take them out on a four-wheeler, a small farm vehicle without a roof and with fat tires designed to drive off-road. Emily and Maggie would stand in the back and hold on tight to their father's shirt collar as he bounced the four-wheeler across the ranch.

They'd ask him to drive faster. And whenever Kirk had to go round up some cattle, he'd stop the four-wheeler, tell the girls to get off, and leave them in the middle of the prairie, all alone. For half an hour or more, little Emily and Maggie would stay there, patiently waiting for their dad to return, surrounded by thousands of acres of open land, with the Rocky Mountains looming to the west and grasslands rolling eastward as far as the eye could see.
