MATOACA CITY, West Virginia, October 16, 1884. DEAREST, DEAREST MOTHER:
We got here this morning after a dreadful trip -- nine or ten hours late -- and this is the first minute I've had when I could sit down and write to you. All the way on the train I was thinking of you and dear father, and longing for you so that I could hardly keep back the tears. I don't see how I can possibly stay away from you for a whole year. Oliver says he wants to take me home for Christmas if everything goes all right with us here and his work proves satisfactory to the manager.
