About seven this evening Amalia, Mother's spinster friend, came looking for us. She wouldn't wait for us to finish supper but took us straight back to her house.
Lots of people were there, sitting on benches placed in the first courtyard and on the veranda. Poor women covered with rebozos and unshod. Snivelling children sweating in their outdoor clothes. Ladies, stiff and withdrawn, trying not to speak to anyone and wrinkling their noses to repell the smells around them.
