We have chosen Monsanto as an illustrative case study. Why, given the growing controversy surrounding genetically altered crops and foods? Simply, Monsanto's transformation between 1993 and 1999 is instructive on several levels. It exemplifies much of our discussion of adaptive leadership and the power of a strange attractor to disturb equilibrium. Monsanto moved to the edge of chaos in order to alter its identity and transform its culture.
By 1999, opposition, globally and within the scientific community, to genetically modified crops and foods had slowed Monsanto's momentum considerably. We will address this outcome in detail in this and later chapters.
