Green rapture and delight of human life, / crazed Hope, in delirious gilded frenzy, / the intricate sleep of those who are awake, / as bereft of treasures as it is of dreams;
soul of the world, exuberant old age, / and then decrepit verdancy imagined;
of the favored the long awaited today, / and of the less fortunate, the tomorrow: / let those with green lenses before their eyes, / seeing all things painted to their desire, / follow your shadow, in search of your day;
for I, wiser, more prudent in my fortune, / hold in both of my hands both of my eyes, / and see no more than those things I can touch.
2 Green is traditionally the color of hope. Today we would speak of rose-colored glasses.
