1876-1911 / The "Porfiriato," or those years in which the dictator Porfirio Díaz governs in Mexico.
1910-1917 / The Mexican Revolution, often considered the nation's most important political and social event of the twentieth century. Armed resistance to the government of Porfirio Díaz begins officially on November 20, 1910. Although Díaz flees the country in early 1911, fighting will continue for several years. A new constitution is adopted in 1917 by the government of Venustiano Carranza and many consider this date the official end of the Revolution, although significant and often violent opposition to the new regime in Mexico City will continue.
