"The Keeper of the King's Peace" is a novel set in England during the Middle Ages. The story follows Sir John Crosby, a nobleman who has been appointed as the Keeper of the King's Peace in a small county town. As the Keeper, Crosby is responsible for maintaining law and order in his district, but he soon finds himself facing challenges from both within and outside of his community. Crosby must deal with threats to his authority from local thieves and bandits, as well as from more powerful forces within the kingdom. Meanwhile, he must also navigate complex political intrigues and personal conflicts within his own family. Throughout the novel, Crosby is forced to confront his own weaknesses and limitations, while also striving to do what is right and just in a world filled with danger and uncertainty.
