Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French historian and politician. His father was a magistrate and his mother came from a noble family. De Tocqueville studied law at the University of Paris and later became a lawyer. In 1831, he traveled to the United States with his friend Gustave de Beaumont to study its prison system. This trip shaped his thoughts about democracy and liberty, leading to his influential work "Democracy in America," which analyzed American political and social institutions.
