Basil Hall Chamberlain

Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935) was a British scholar and author who specialized in the study of Japanese language and culture. He was born in Northumberland, England, and studied at the University of Oxford. He was appointed professor of Japanese at Oxford in 1892, and later became professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University. Chamberlain wrote several books on Japanese language and culture, including Things Japanese (1890), A Handbook of Colloquial Japanese (1896), and The Language, Mythology, and Geographical Nomenclature of Japan (1905). He also wrote a number of books on the history and culture of Japan, including The Invention of a New Religion in Japan (1910) and The Invention of a New Language in Japan (1912). He was a member of the Asiatic Society of Japan and the Japan Society of London.
