Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist, and conservationist best known for her children's books featuring animals such as Peter Rabbit. Born into a privileged household, Potter educated herself in the sciences and had a keen interest in mycology and other natural sciences. She wrote and illustrated more than 20 books, the most famous being The Tale of Peter Rabbit, which was published in 1902. Potter was also a successful sheep farmer and conservationist, and she left much of her property to the National Trust upon her death.
