Samuel Dashiell Hammett was born on May 27, 1894, in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He grew up in Baltimore and served as a detective for the Pinkerton National Detective Agency from 1915 to 1922. During World War I, he worked as an ambulance driver in France. After the war, he began writing crime fiction, drawing on his experiences as a detective. His first novel was published in 1929.
