The novel follows the story of a young man, John Lawford, who is falsely accused of murder. He is sent to prison, but escapes and goes on the run. He is pursued by the police, and also by a mysterious figure known as White Face, who is determined to find him and bring him to justice. Lawford is aided by a mysterious woman, who helps him to evade capture and eventually reveals her true identity. He discovers that White Face is actually a former criminal mastermind, who is now seeking revenge against those who wronged him. Lawford must use all of his wits and courage to outwit White Face and prove his innocence. Along the way, he discovers the truth about his past and the secrets of White Face.
