Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844-1911) was an American author, poet, and lecturer. She was born in Andover, Massachusetts, and was the daughter of a Congregational minister. She attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary (now Mount Holyoke College) and graduated in 1863. Phelps Ward wrote over 50 books, including novels, short stories, and poetry. Her most famous works include The Gates Ajar (1868), Beyond the Gates (1883), and The Story of Avis (1877). She was a strong advocate for women's rights and was a leader in the temperance movement. She was also a prominent lecturer, speaking on topics such as women's rights, temperance, and religion. Phelps Ward was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was the first woman to be elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. She was also the first woman to be awarded an honorary degree from Yale University. She died in 1911 in Newton, Massachusetts.
