Elizabeth von Arnim (31 August 1866 – 9 February 1941), born Mary Annette Beauchamp, was an Australian-born British novelist. She also wrote under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley. Von Arnim was born in Sydney, Australia, to a wealthy family. She was educated in England and Germany, and married Count Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin, a Prussian aristocrat, in 1891. The couple had five children before divorcing in 1910. Von Arnim's first novel, Elizabeth and Her German Garden, was published in 1898 and was an immediate success. She went on to write several more novels, including The Enchanted April (1922), which was adapted into a successful film in 1992. Her works often focus on the lives of independent, strong-willed women and their relationships with men. Von Arnim died in 1941 in South Africa, where she had been living since the 1930s.
