The Sundial by Fred M. White (1908)
The story follows the fortunes of the wealthy and powerful family of Sir John Davenant, a baronet of ancient lineage. Sir John's son, Sir Charles, is a gambler and a wastrel, and his daughter, Lady Mary, is a beautiful and headstrong young woman. When Sir Charles is killed in a duel, Sir John is forced to turn to his daughter to save the family from ruin. Lady Mary is determined to restore the family's fortunes, and she sets out to do so by marrying a wealthy man. She meets and falls in love with the handsome and mysterious Lord Rotherwood, but soon discovers that he is not who he appears to be. The novel follows Lady Mary as she navigates the treacherous waters of high society, and as she discovers the truth about Lord Rotherwood and the secrets of the Davenant family. Along the way, she must confront her own feelings and make difficult choices about her future.
