The Magical Wooden Head

A powerful sorcerer named Hakawau learns of a magical wooden head that has caused the deaths of many who attempted to approach it. This head, kept on a Sacred Mount by sorcerers Puarata and Tautōhito, possesses formidable powers that have deterred countless warriors from seizing it. Intrigued and confident in his own magical abilities, Hakawau decides to confront the head and its guardians. Hakawau embarks on a perilous journey with a friend, traversing treacherous landscapes and overcoming fears as they approach the fortress. Despite the ominous signs and the stench of death from previous victims, Hakawau employs incantations to protect them from the malevolent spirits guarding the head. They successfully navigate the deadly path and reach the fortress, where Hakawau sends forth his own genii to engage the spirits of Puarata. In a strategic maneuver, Hakawau's genii feign retreat, luring the evil spirits away from the fortress. This allows Hakawau's remaining genii to storm the fortress and defeat the guardians. With the spirits of Puarata vanquished, Hakawau approaches the fortress, where Puarata, sensing danger, calls upon the head for assistance. However, the head can only emit weak sounds, having lost its power due to the destruction of its spirits. Hakawau boldly climbs over the fortress walls, disregarding the warnings of the inhabitants. After resting within the fortress, he decides to leave, refusing food offered by the locals. As he departs, he strikes the threshold, unleashing a deadly curse that annihilates everyone inside the fortress. Hakawau's triumph over the magical head and its guardians solidifies his reputation as a powerful sorcerer, demonstrating the potency of his own magical arts and the consequences of underestimating an adversary. The tale explores themes of power, ambition, and the consequences of magical confrontations, illustrating the dangers inherent in the pursuit of supernatural strength.
