Herman Daniel Umbstaetter (1851–1913) was an American publisher, editor and short-story writer. He founded The Black Cat in Boston in 1895 and encouraged new writers by judging stories on their merits and paying promptly. Jack London described the importance of that support in his introduction to Umbstaetter’s collection The Red-Hot Dollar and Other Stories from the Black Cat (1911). The volume includes “Asleep at Lone Mountain,” “The Unturned Trump” and “The Mystery of the Thirty Millions,” the last written with Thomas Fenwick Anderson. Umbstaetter sold the magazine in 1912 and died after a hunting accident the following year.
