Helen Hay Whitney

Helen Hay Whitney (1876–1944) was an American author, philanthropist, and socialite. She was born in New York City to a prominent family, and was the daughter of John Hay, a prominent diplomat and Secretary of State under President William McKinley. She was educated at private schools in the United States and Europe, and was a member of the social elite in New York City. Whitney wrote several books, including a biography of her father, John Hay: From Poetry to Politics (1914), and a novel, The House of Mirth (1905). She was also a philanthropist, donating to numerous charities and organizations, including the American Red Cross and the YMCA. She was a member of the Colony Club, a women's social club in New York City, and was a patron of the arts. Whitney died in 1944 in New York City.
