Hugh Walpole (1884-1941) was an English novelist and playwright. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and educated at Cambridge University. He wrote over 30 novels, including the popular Herries Chronicles, which were set in the Lake District of England. He also wrote several plays, including The Admirable Crichton and The Old Ladies. His works often featured strong female characters and explored themes of morality and religion. He was a popular author in his day, and was knighted in 1937.
