James Grant (1822-1887) was a Scottish novelist and miscellaneous writer, best known for his prolific output of historical romances, military adventures, and popular histories. Born in Edinburgh, he served for a time in the British Army before turning to journalism and fiction. His military background strongly shaped his writing, giving many of his novels a focus on soldiers, campaigns, honor, and imperial conflict. Grant’s best-known works include The Romance of War, The Scottish Cavalier, Bothwell, and The Yellow Frigate. He also wrote historical and biographical works, often centered on Scotland, the British Army, and notable figures of the past. Though widely read in the nineteenth century, his reputation later declined, and he is now chiefly remembered as a highly productive Victorian popular novelist.
