The story takes place after the events of The Emerald City of Oz and follows Rinkitink, a king from Pingaree who has been imprisoned by the evil King Kaliko of Quadling Country. Rinkitink's son, Inga, sets out to rescue his father with the help of a young boy named Betsy Bobbin, who is on her way to visit her aunt in the Land of Oz. They are joined by a talking horse and a group of travelers. Together, they face various obstacles as they journey through the Land of Oz, including encounters with wild animals and hostile tribes. Along the way, they meet other characters from previous books in the series, such as the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion. The group eventually reaches Quadling Country, where they must use their wits and bravery to defeat King Kaliko's forces and rescue Rinkitink.
