The Blue Castle is a 1926 novel by Canadian author L.M. Montgomery. It tells the story of Valancy Stirling, a 29-year-old woman living in rural Canada in the early 20th century. Valancy is a spinster, living with her overbearing mother and aunt, and is resigned to a life of drudgery and loneliness. When Valancy learns that she has only a year to live, she decides to break free from the constraints of her family and society and live life to the fullest. She moves out of her family home and into the Blue Castle, a dilapidated cottage on the edge of town. There, she meets Barney Snaith, a local recluse, and the two become friends. Valancy embarks on a journey of self-discovery, learning to stand up for herself and to follow her own dreams. She also finds love with Barney, and the two eventually marry. In the end, Valancy discovers that she is not dying after all, and she and Barney live happily ever after.
