Cities of The Plain by Marcel Proust

Cities of the Plain is the third and final volume of Marcel Proust’s monumental novel, In Search of Lost Time. It follows the narrator, Marcel, as he continues his journey of self-discovery and exploration of the past. The novel begins with Marcel and his friend Robert de Saint-Loup visiting the Verdurin family in the countryside. Marcel is reunited with Albertine, the woman he loves, and the two of them spend time together in the countryside. Marcel is also reunited with his old friend, the Baron de Charlus, who is now living in Paris. The novel follows Marcel as he visits various places in Paris, including the Guermantes family’s home, the Champs-Elysées, and the Bois de Boulogne. He also visits the Verdurin family in the countryside and attends a party at the Grand Hotel. The novel culminates with Marcel’s visit to the seaside town of Balbec, where he meets the mysterious Mlle. Vinteuil and her daughter. Marcel is deeply moved by their story and the beauty of the town. The novel ends with Marcel reflecting on his life and his journey of self-discovery. He realizes that he has found a new understanding of life and love, and that he is now ready to move on with his life.
