A space pilot, Kendall, faces an unexpected crisis when he flunks a reflex test upon landing on Mars, jeopardizing his career and leaving him stranded. After a series of bureaucratic delays and a violent confrontation with Space Service personnel, he finds himself in a gutter, contemplating his bleak future. A Martian named Das Shamra offers him a way out: a job piloting a hijacked spaceship to intercept a valuable cargo of dionate extract. Initially resistant, Kendall learns that his poor reflexes may be due to a neural distorter implanted by Martian operatives. Desperate to return to Earth and support his pregnant wife, he reluctantly agrees to the job after undergoing a painful procedure to remove the distorter. Kendall pilots the hijacked ship, using his superior Earth-trained reflexes to withstand high acceleration, while the Martians aboard suffer. Seizing the opportunity, he turns the tables on his captors, incapacitating them during the flight. He returns to Space Service headquarters, ready to reclaim his status as a pilot and return home, having outsmarted the Martian criminals and regained control of his life.
