Randall Garrett

Randall Garrett (1927-1987) was an American science fiction and fantasy author. He wrote under his own name and several pseudonyms, including David Gordon, Darrel T. Langart, and S. M. Tenneshaw. Garrett was born in New York City and grew up in Los Angeles. He attended UCLA, where he studied physics and mathematics. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and afterwards returned to UCLA to finish his degree. Garrett began writing science fiction in the 1950s, and his first published story appeared in Astounding Science Fiction in 1956. He wrote more than 100 stories and novels, including the Lord Darcy series, the Nick Danger series, and the novel Too Many Magicians. He was a member of the Futurians, a group of science fiction writers and fans in New York City. Garrett was known for his wit and humor, and his stories often featured clever solutions to seemingly impossible problems. He was also a master of the short story form, and his stories were often praised for their tight plotting and clever twists. Garrett died in 1987 at the age of 59.
