Under the Cloak is a novel by Rhoda Broughton, first published in 1881. It tells the story of a young woman, Mary, who is forced to flee her home in Ireland after her father is accused of a crime he did not commit. She finds refuge in the home of a kindly English family, the Larkins, and soon falls in love with their son, John. However, Mary's past catches up with her and she is forced to flee again, this time to London. There, she is taken in by a mysterious woman, Mrs. Grey, who helps her to find a job and a place to live. As Mary's life in London progresses, she discovers that Mrs. Grey is not who she seems and that she is connected to Mary's past in Ireland. The novel follows Mary as she navigates her new life in London and attempts to uncover the truth about her past.
