Dane Harrell, a volunteer, uses an experimental thought-helmet to enter the mind of a captured Dimellian alien, seeking vital military information amidst an ongoing war between Earth and the Dimellians. Upon entering, he finds himself in a surreal, alien landscape resembling the Dimellian home world, filled with bizarre flora and fauna. His goal is to reach a castle that symbolizes the alien's guarded secrets. As he navigates this mental realm, he encounters a larger-than-life version of the Dimellian, who challenges him to a mental duel. The alien's mocking demeanor and superior size create an immediate conflict, as Harrell realizes that traditional combat is futile in this mental space where both can manipulate their forms. They engage in a battle of wills, exchanging mental attacks, but neither gains the upper hand. Harrell recognizes that surprise is key to overcoming the alien's defenses. He devises a strategy to create multiple duplicates of himself, each with specific roles to distract and attack the Dimellian simultaneously. This diversion allows Harrell to make a direct assault on the castle, where he believes the secrets are stored. As the duplicates engage the alien, Harrell successfully infiltrates the castle and discovers crucial documents detailing troop movements and battle plans. However, just as he retrieves the information, the alien realizes the breach and retaliates, causing Harrell to lose consciousness. Upon awakening, Harrell learns from Dr. Phelps that only a few seconds have passed in the real world, despite his perception of being trapped for much longer. The experience highlights the disorienting nature of mental exploration and the power of the mind in warfare, ultimately providing Earth with the intelligence needed to prepare for the impending Dimellian attack.
