To a discerning and valiant captain

Your plumes, I infer, are a sign of bravery and discernment but I cannot decide whether for your helmet or your inkwell.

In your crest is clearly displayed a well-armed discernment joined to a well-lettered bravery, and to summarize I say your blade cut and sharpened your quill, your quill measures and scans your blade.

1 The plumes in the crest on the helmet of an officer could indicate his status as a soldier and a writer.
