Edith, meanwhile, is in love with the same wealthy young man. When Elsie's father discovers her relationship with the artist, he forbids her to see him and forces her to marry the wealthy young man. Edith, meanwhile, is left alone and heartbroken. The novel follows the sisters as they struggle to come to terms with their new lives. Elsie is unhappy in her marriage, while Edith is consumed by her unrequited love. Eventually, Elsie's husband discovers her affair with the artist and the sisters are forced to flee. They travel to Europe, where they find themselves in a world of art and beauty. But their newfound freedom is short-lived, as tragedy strikes and the sisters are forced to confront the consequences of their choices.
