William Campbell Gault (1910–1995) was an American author of crime fiction, westerns, and sports novels. He was born in 1910 in Los Angeles, California, and attended the University of California, Berkeley. Gault began writing in the 1930s, and his first novel, The Big Heat, was published in 1947. He wrote more than 50 novels, including the popular Brock Callahan series, which featured a private investigator. He also wrote several westerns, including The Guns of Billy the Kid and The Man from Nowhere. Gault was a member of the Mystery Writers of America and the Western Writers of America. He was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1958 for The Big Heat. He died in 1995 in Santa Barbara, California.
