God has value only insofar as he represents Christ, and man has value only insofar as he represents Christ. It is the same with money. / - Karl Marx, "Comments on James Mill, Éléments d'économie politique"
Rozitchner's book on Augustine, published when the author had already reached the mature age of seventy-three, is an astonishing feat that combines a painstaking and sustained close reading with a series of wild theoretical speculations. Its claims repeat many of the ideas made in earlier works, add new ones, and correct still others, all the while anchoring them in the self-proclaimed example of a medieval saint who might well turn out to have been the first modern subject.
