He couldn't sleep for thinking about Dante. He thought less about Saul, who had found his own fate. Suicide. Or pushed to his death by María-Águila. He'd fallen into the hands of the people he owed his life to. What would have become of Saul without the masses who acclaimed him as their redeemer? Surely a man of his intelligence knew the fate of the people's savior once the people felt saved and no longer in need of the redeemer.
The image of María-Águila obsessed Aaron. The repentant nun (Sister Consolata), the committed revolutionary, perhaps knew how Saul's destiny was fulfilled. Thrown from a window into the arms of the people. The revolutionary nun, Sister Consolata-María-Águila. This idea-or image-followed Aaron like a question, the mystery of not knowing who María-Águila, or Sister Consolata, was and therefore, not knowing who Saul Mendes-Renania was.
