Which one invited the other?
Charlotte, Madame Mà¨re, invited the young General Andrea del Sargo to thank him for naming Leonardo leader of the new government instead of executing him. Del Sargo invited Charlotte, but because nobility obliges the rest of us, it was up to him to travel to Dordogne and pay his respects to Leonardo's mother. She was not seeking-her entire tradition forbade her asking for-a new apology for Dante's death. He had already explained the circumstances. There was no need to repeat those reasons. But she feared that del Sargo might arrive with some of these known, accepted, and unnecessary explanations. Would the young general have the tact, the subtlety, of avoiding the evocation of what was done because, after all, what's done is done?
