At the very first attempt with a skeleton key, Lyston opened the American roll-top desk and the series of drawers that ran down both sides of it. With meticulous care he removed the papers from one drawer after another and placed them face downwards on the floor so that he could restore them to their proper order when he had finished his search. The best part of half an hour elapsed before he came upon what he was looking for in one of the pigeon holes at the back of the desk.
This consisted of a French thousand franc note, and with it a sheet of paper about the same size and exactly the same shade of colour. Lyston smiled as he held these scraps side by side to the light and examined the watermark. As far as he could see, they were identical.
